Here's Hoping

February 16, 2009 by David Eggleton

Living as we do in a densely populated area, we're necessarily and heavily involved in the enormous, haphazard structure I designate as THE ECONOMY. Having come as far as we have with that ailing system, it's logical for us to hope that the combination of the unprecedented adjustments made in the final months of the Bush era and those rolling out in the Obama era will succeed. The ability of so many to participate is at stake! The ability of many to keep what they have pulled together is in doubt!

That hope is logical in the sense that it follows. However, it's not reasonable. It is easy. It is mere wishing. This is clear from controversies among observers all around -- and there are many. No one knows what will happen. In particular, no one knows if what stimulates also renews and stabilizes.

I believe nothing so enormous and haphazard can be tweaked into a healthy whole. Adjustments made where creation is called for might bring relief, but that relief will be partial and short-term. A reasoned and reasonable response by each person would include thinking about and investing in a desirable, attainable future. The greatest number can participate in creating lasting, healthy wholes if all begin to focus on their respective locales. As I've said, that's where individuals can most effectively invest the attention, time and energy they control.

The logic of more for me is bankrupt. I hope for the ascent of the logic of more of us, by us, for us, here.
